MATHEMATICAL NATURE WALK
Date:12/07/23
Place: Altinho, Panaji – Goa.
Time: 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.
Dr. Russell De Souza organized a 45 minutes mathematical nature walk for the F.Y.B.Ed Mathematics students outside the campus. This was done in order to increase the learner’s enthusiasm, understanding and participation as nature can serve as a wonderful classroom. During the walk we were assisted to observe the beautiful sights surrounding us. All of us were eager to explore the various structures and shapes and how mathematics could be related with the nature. There were various observations done by the students, after every observation Sir Russel came up with a question that helped us to deepen our understanding about a particular concept that was learnt years back. Patterns of the leaves, the roof tops on the houses, the carvings on the gate, roof tiles on the compound walls, balusters, lightning arrestors and shaped tiles, were some of the observations. While walking down the street we came across a lamp post where we were instructed to determine the angle using an approximate observation method. The mason used the plumb-bob to explain us the alignment of the wall. Overall, it was a very great experience as our minds were enriched with knowledge. The session ended with a group photograph.
